Sometimes you just have to try to do something in order to learn how to do it. It's okay to have low quality or "imperfect" projects so long as you are able to learn something! One of my first attempts to create my own design was a Joystick Mount. It taught me a lot about creating designs with tolerances for 3d printing. Just because you made the hole the width of the screw, doesn't mean the plastic will settle at the exact same size. It also can help you see areas where you want more or less material to handle any stress you might put on the design or to reduce the print time and material cost.
